Vital Connections: Roadway Projects Set Foundation For New Mixed-Use Community

When the last brick is laid, the 90- acre, $350-million CityPlace project in Overland Park, Kan., a suburb of Kansas City, is expected to become the heart of one of the country's newest live, work, play communities. One of the early challenges to turn this mixed-use community into reality was accessibility. Built southwest of College Boulevard and U.S. Highway 69 in Overland Park, the city needed to reroute Switzer Road, a major thoroughfare that runs through the new development. Modifying the 3,300-ft Switzer corridor required designing two roundabouts, aligning roads, building storm sewers, creating a concrete pavement jointing plan, coordinating utilities, designing a traffic signal, installing LED street lighting, installing signing, marking pavement, and designing trails, landscaping and irrigation. The Switzer corridor connects with an extension of 113th Street at a roundabout at the center of CityPlace before continuing north to College Boulevard.
