ALASKA North Slope Borough is planning to build a new Department of Wildlife Management facility in Barrow, at a site to be determined. There are two alternatives. The first is constructing a new 6,000-sq-ft facility to meet the administrative needs of the staff while converting the current 4,000 sq ft of administrative offices into newly remodeled sleeping rooms for visiting scientists and seasonal field workers. This alternative provides less overall square footage than the total department needs, but it would have a lower cost. It also leaves new lab space, vehicle and equipment storage, and shops to be designed, funded and constructed at a later time. The second alternative entails constructing a new, 16,000-sq-ft facility that fully captures the entire department program for administrative work, sleeping quarters, and laboratory and storage space. This option would cost more and require additional funding from other sources.
