BUILDING A (3(1/2))″ GAUGE BR STANDARD CLASS 9F 2-10-0, WITH A CROSTI BOILER

When I began this project, I intended to build a BR Class 9F 2-10-0 based on the LBSC/Martin Evans design for Evening Star. However, by the time I had erected the frames for this locomotive I felt that I had been building models to the 'words and music' of other designers for too long and that perhaps I should do something at least a little more original, but in view of the frames that I had made and the number of castings bought for the original project, I thought that a Crosti boilered version would be quite original enough. The first problem that this change of mind left me with was where to get sufficient information on the prototype to enable me to build the model since, of course, there are no longer any Crosti 9F's to go out and study. My main sources of information were 'The British Railways Standard 9F 2.10.0' by Philip Atkins and the National Railway Museum library from where I was able to obtain copies of some of the original British Railways drawings together with other help and advice.
