摘要

Organisational performance has tradi- tionally been measured in mechanistic terms-inputs and outputs-and further reduced to financial parameters, allowing comparison across a broad spectrum of activity. The competitive commercial environment, which drives so much activity today, understandably draws attention to these bottom line indicators as the essence of success. There can be little doubt that over the course of the 20th century, organisations have been phenomenally successful in supplying the needs of markets through the provision of products and services. The competitive environment in which they operate has stimulated and driven the development of technologies on a scale unimaginable to previous generations. Access to labour-saving devices, recreational facilities, the abundance of food and drink (in the developed world) is unparalleled in history - only mirrored by the leaps in efficiency and productivity that organisations have made, enabling more and more to be delivered at ever-decreasing cost.
