REMINISCENCES OF THE FOUNDER AND EDITOR OF THE ENGINEERING ECONOMIST

I was asked some time ago how one goes about starting a journal from scratch when it does not have a captive clientele, such as members of a society whose dues defray publishing expenses. This, coupled with a request to write my reminiscences at the annual meeting of the Engineering Economy Division at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in June 1974, leads to my putting down some of the high and low spots of the undertaking. One thing that I know now is that I might not have started The Engineering Economist if I had had the faintest inkling of what a formidable undertaking it would turn out to be. I say this even though I like to think that the benefits to all and sundry are greater than the costs incurred by me and all of my former associates who helped make The Engineering Economist a success.
