An oil company's supply chain can loop around the globe, weaving across continents, time zones and languages to link together field crews, authorized approvers, purchasing staff, suppliers and distribution staff. It's no secret that the inefficiencies in such a supply chain make it ripe for a revolution at the hands of the medium that knows no borders or paper work -the Internet. "With its fragmented supplier base and international operations, the oil and gas industry is a perfect match for Internet purchasing," says Karl Jessen, Director of Energy and Internet Strategies at the Yankee Group in Boston. "But like most other industries, it's at a very early stage."
