Strategies for Open Power

As power markets become more sophisticated, conventional oil-and gas-fired units will be required to adapt if they are to survive. Every unit is either already required or will be required to cycle and ramp faster than in the past. Fast and reliable ramp rates are highly desirable in this new market environment. To achieve them, clear and robust control strategies have to be applied, tested and optimized on-line. Serious control improvements are necessary to get there, be it a controls retrofit or just honest improvement in control strategics and re-tuning. This article explores techniques for either approach. The techniques are also applicable to coal-fired units and cogeneration plants.
