Since 1992, when the World Bank significantly changed its energy lending policy, there has been a substantial increase in worldwide private sector participation in the energy sector. Where, and on what, were these latest energy investments made? Between 1990 and 1997, private companies undertook the management, operations, rehabilitation, or construction risk of 534 projects, with investments totaling $131 billion. Most of these projects were concentrated in East Asia, where 165 private projects represented a total investment of $50 billion, and in Latin America and the Caribbean, where 169 private power projects represented a total investment of $45 billion.
