摘要

In a recent paper, Behrouzi and Luckham have claimed to provide "a proof'' of the unsuitability of size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) in examining the molecular-mass distributions of petroleum asphaltenes. The claim was based on two propositions: first, that samples aggregate during SEC in three solvents tested [tetrahydrofuran (THF), toluene, and 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP)] and, second, that adsorption phenomena take place between sample and column packing, in the presence of NMP. The authors conclude that SEC is not a "... competent and reliable technique to analyze quantitatively size and mass distributions of asphaltenes".
