Project Delays, Financial Issues Concern Wind Sector

The cancellation of a $300-million wind power project in Ontario by Edmonton-based EPCOR Utilities Inc. isn't indicative of things to come for the sector in Canada, but there is concern about the impact of the credit crisis on these types of developments. "There are two separate issues," said Sean Whittaker, vice-president of policy at the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA). "There are projects getting killed because of regulatory and government delays. And there is the financial crisis issue, which is definitely a concern. It's hard to find anyone who deals with money who isn't concerned. Across the board developers (of renewable energy projects) are having issues."
