The first quarter report by the Market Surveillance Administrator (MSA) on the wholesale electricity market showed prices averaged $76.95 per megawatt hour, up from $63.29 in 2007.rnThe MSA report suggested the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) market was influenced by higher average natural gas prices in the first quarter, which at $7.56 per gigajoule were up from about $7 in the same period in the previous two years.rnAdjusted for the improved gas market, heat rates for Alberta electricity prices at 10.2 were similar to the first quarter last year, when they were 10.6.rn"Further, natural gas prices have trended up since September 2007 and higher rates are expected to continue throughout 2008," the MSA said in its report.
