We expect demand from the plant-based meat alternative industry for pea protein to outperform other protein options over the coming five years. It is produced by isolating protein from yellow peas. Already used by multiple brands, including Beyond Meat, Raised & Roosted and Lightlife, pea protein is already one of the top rivals to soy in the market. In May 2020, UK-based Meatless Farm Co replaced soy with pea protein in their plant-based burger and sausage products. We identify the following reasons why pea protein will become the protein source of choice for plant-based meat over the coming five years: 1.1Pea protein production is less resource-intensive, according to the World Research Institute, using less water, energy and land than soy relative to the amount of protein obtained and therefore more environmentally sustainable. For example, pea protein requires 3,200 litres of water per 1kg of protein, compared with soy protein, which requires 5,882 litres of water per 1kg of protein, according to Cosucra.
