Thyssen announced their TWIN project and its successful installation in Stuttgart School of Architecture in March 2003. The TWIN project allows two lifts to share one shaft. "Fantastic," said Rosi Bauer, as reported by John Gale in his July 2003 ELEVATOR WORLD article, as she described the Thyssen TWIN lift system. "What an opportunity," I say! Two lifts in one shaft is not a new idea and has been suggested from time to time. In Europe, the harmonized standard EN81-1 does not prevent it specifically, except it talks about "a partition between the moving parts of different lifts" sharing a common well (clause 5.6.2). The main problem will be the risks recited at clause 0.1.2.1, eg., crushing, falling, impact, etc. These aspects have to be dealt with under the Lift Directive, in order to be able to apply the CE marking. Details are given by Thymm and Reuter in Lift Report 5/2003, page 128. The exciting idea of TWIN to traffic designers is the opportunities for flexible traffic design. Here are three.
