In the words of the baseball player Yogi Berra, "If you don't know where you are going, you'll end up some place else." Like all good aphorisms, it contains a grain of truth. The importance of planning for a publication like Elektor is essential. Nowadays, the numerous cogs in our own multinational publishing house are so closely meshed that we all need to follow the plan and observe deadlines. It used to be different. The preview meeting for the next issue was more like a wish list, and what actually got published one issue later depended on many imponderables: Has the author finished the circuit? Are there any barriers to testing in the lab? Is anyone on this project indispensable? Are they off sick or on holiday? All these variables are more pertinent during the summer vacation period. Usually, after my annual vacation climbing in the mountains, I would return to the office and find the September issue waiting for me on my desk. The contents were sometimes surprising but always interesting and made a good read.
