Chennai Port using RFID technology to upgrade security, vehicle and manpower management

Over 125 years old, Chennai Port, will soon get a touch of technology to upgrade its management and security systems. One of India's largest ports, was a major travel port before becoming a major container port. Situated in the coroman-del coast in South-East India, the port of Chennai has contributed substantially towards the economic growth of Tamil Nadu, especially for the manufacturing boom in South India. The fast expanding Chennai Port has increased its turnover by record 115.3% in the last five years - from Rs. 413.51 crore in 2003-04 to Rs.890.40 crore in 2007-08, The increased turnover has enabled the port to take up larger number of capacity augmentation projects, which are now underway. The port is all set to make use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to provide access control and instant vehicle tracking mechanism. The initiative will make vehicle and manpower management and surveillance easy for the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). This will also enable the port authorities in achieving an effective compliance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS), framed by the International Maritime Organisation, which is mandatory for all ports.
