Smart card registration of vehicles in Maharashtra still on hold

The Government of Maharashtra has put on hold the smart card based registration of new vehicles in the state since November 2014 and has started issuing paperback RCs to vehicle owners. Issuing of Smart card based RCs was launched in 2007 when the Transport department started registration of vehicles on smart card. The cards with a microchip contain details such as vehicle number, engine number, registration date, class and owner's details, among others. Since November 2014, the state has also put on hold high-security registration plates (HSRP), which was introduced by the government to ensure better safety of vehicles.
