No more than a year or two ago, discussions of digital color proofing centered almost exclusively around the variety of hardware devices that produce the proofs. Technology ranging from inkjet to laser to dye sublimation competed for the top spot in output quality, affordability, and ease of use. But today, there is much more to the proofing process, thanks in large part to advances in many of the other components in the workflow. For professionals in the graphic arts market today, purchase and implementation decisions now encompass the proofing engine, the inks and media, the RIP software, and a color management solution. Companies such as Best (now part of EFI) and Monaco (now part of X-Rite) have been involved in driving proofing engines for a while, but newer companies such as GMG, CGS, and others have become more visible in the recent past.
