One core functional block common to most all mobile phone and laptop power management systems is the battery charger. Test requirements for evaluating its many functions are extensive. The dc test system power supply used to evaluate battery-charging functions needs to do a lot more than just provide power. The representative power management system functional block diagram (see Fig. 1) reflects a high level of complexity typical of today's mobile devices. Functional blocks within the system can usually be categorized as either digital or analog.
