The digital storage oscilloscope (DSO) has become the tool of choice for engineers who want to verify the proper operation of a circuit or to troubleshoot the source of problems when the device under test is not working properly. There are many kinds of DSOs. How does one go about choosing one that is best suited to the job at hand? A DSO is often used as a tool to view signals. In this case, the size and resolution of the screen are important factors in selecting the oscilloscope. A different scenario occurs when a DSO acts as the front-end data acquisition for a computer-controlled test system. All the data are acquired by the DSO and sent over a bus to a computer for analysis, making the throughput rate of acquired data to a host a critical feature.
