Selecting integrated VCOs for GSM/EDGE cellular handsets

The ongoing drive to reduce cellular handset size, cost, and current consumption has led to functional integration in one or two increasingly feature-rich chips, and this has presented a series of challenges in the development of Global System for Mobile Communications/Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (GSM/ EDGE) transceivers. Today, small-package integrated circuit (IC) transceivers are available that combine multiple low-noise amplifiers (LNAs), mixers, oscillators, phase-locked loops (PLLs), digital-to-analog converters, and amplifiers on a single device.
