Connector manufacturers once had an easy time meeting their customers' interconnection needs with a "one size fits all" strategy. Semiconductor manufacturers packaged new devices as through-hole DIPs and as long as the connector makers offered 8-pin to 40-pin DIP sockets on a 0.100-in. pitch, they pretty much covered all the needs of the end user.
