Goodbye TWT, hello GaN

摘要

With its QBS-609 1-kW pulsed power amplifier, API Technologies has created the first cost-effective solid-state replacement for high-power, pulsed travelling wave tube (TWT) systems. A much more rugged and reliable system, the GaN-based amplifier increases system lifetime by a factor of four, and while its initial cost is about the same as a TWT-based amp, it is much more cost effective. Further, the reduced size and weight of the QBS-609 is a major benefit for its intended applications; with a typical X-band frequency range, it designed for use in numerous military and high-end commercial avionic applications including radar, communication transmitters, and jamming systems. No wonder that the amplifier is being rapidly adopted.
