Battery charging, always difficult at best, is complicated by the variety of battery-operated systems and by the 'chemistries' with which batteries are manufactured. As a result, the variety of proprietary charging schemes designed by systems manufacturers in the past has led to a proliferation of interface software for the power electronics internal to notebook computers.
