TI takes 0.13μ tech to China

San Jose, Calif. - To Texas Instruments, China is more than a vast market where it can sell DSPs and futuristic GSM-on-chip devices. As recent disclosures about its relationship with a new dedicated chip foundry show, it's also a place that could have a stake in manufacturing the Dallas-based company's most advanced products. TI and Shanghai-based Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. acknowledged that they have struck a deal whereby TI will use SMIC to fabricate the "noncritical" interconnect layers of TI's 0.13-mi-cron chips. It may not be obvious now, but five years from now the industry may look back at TFs move as a milestone that helped debunk the notion that China's electronics industry would always be behind the rest of the industrialized world.
