Straight talk on comms security: RSA: Insecure networks a fact of life

San Jose, Calif. ― It's a conundrum worthy of a cryptographer. In the wake of Sept. 11, many vow that computer networks must become much more secure, but others note that by their very nature these systems will always be insecure and may be getting even more so. Clashing keynoters at lastweek's RSACon-ference 2002 here, one of the first big security gatherings since the terrorist attacks, laid out that central conflict. Richard A. Clarke, named White House czar for cybersecurity in the aftermath of Sept. 11, called for stronger measures to fend off potentially crippling attacks on data networks.
