San Jose, Calif. - While Ca-dence Design Systems Inc. was losing ground to Synopsys Inc. last quarter, creating a stir in the design automation industry, a subplot was unfolding behind the scenes. Even as Synopsys was touting wins at graphics chip vendors Nvidia Corp. and ATI Technologies Inc.-two advanced EDA tool users-Cadence had already jimmied the lock and broken into Synopsys' house. EE Times has learned that Cadence last quarter sold a number of seats of its Get2Chip synthesis tool to Nvidia, a longtime touted user of Synopsys. ATI, already a big customer of Cadence tools, last year reclaimed the top spot in the graphics chip market over Nvidia with the R-300/9700 series processors, built in part on a Cadence flow and with tools Cadence has acquired over the past two years in its efforts to strengthen its implementation tool set.
