MEMS sensor lets designer select g ranges on-the-fly

Austin, Texas — Freescale Semiconductor Inc. has launched a three-axis, low-gravity (low-g), microelectromechanical-systems sensor with a g-select feature that ranges from 1.5 to 6 g's. Designed for portable consumer electronics, the MMA7260Q accelerometer touts a fast response time, low current consumption, low supply voltage and high sensitivity, all in a small package. This single-chip device detects in three dimensions, XYZ, allowing portable devices to respond to changes in position, orientation and movement, Freescale said. The package size—6 x 6 x 1.45 mm, means the sensor will require less board space than other solutions. A quick turn-on time (1 millisecond) and a sleep mode (3 microamps) suit the device for battery-powered electronics such as PDAs, cell phones, 3-D games and digital cameras, the company said.
