There was once a time when an engineer designing a wireless-LAN transceiver need only worry about testing a single radio. He or she would probably buy box instruments that were explicitly designed for WLAN measurements, and, barring maybe a general-purpose spectrum analyzer, the WLAN box would likely solve all of the engineer's test needs. Those days, however, are rapidly coming to an end.
