In the paper a new procedure for obtaining the three phase windings manufactured in multiple layers(three or four) is described. The improved performances of these windings are related to the fundamental winding factor, the total space harmonic content, the end winding length and the electrical unbalance, where appropriate. The new procedure, based on doubling(or trebling) the winding and relatively left/right shifting each other by one(or more) slots, is applied in the paper for both integer and fractional three phase windings, either balanced or unbalanced. Two examples of application, based on the so called "rule of 1-2-3", are given in the paper. First, the 24 slots/2 poles balanced winding is developed step by step in a new final arrangement of partial one/two layers having 1% higher fundamental winding factor and shorter end winding length at almost the same spatial harmonic content, compared to the best winding used in practice. In the second example, the three phase tooth concentrated unbalanced winding of IS slots/12 poles is improved using the developed procedure in order either to reduce the total space harmonic content or to reduce the degree of electrical unbalance.
