A brief description of the principles of stress-related insulation coordination is given based on a very large field test of electrical insulations and several university investigations. This report is intended to give the basis for a physically founded revision of insulation coordination standards. Long-time and short-time voltage stresses are discussed. The microenvironmental conditions acting on the insulations are described. The insulating material and shape of the electrodes are discussed. The electric strength of clearances in air and the electric strength of creepage distances are detailed.
