Electrical engineers have a need to create a wide range of different drawings, varying from schematics, assembly drawings and single line drawings, through to terminal plans. In addition, documents such as bills of materials, parts lists, and label reports, have to be produced. Many of these drawings and documents are produced manually, which is time-consuming, error-prone and not very cost-effective. In non-intelligent electrical design systems, changes are made to one drawing or document which has a knock on effect for other drawings and documentation. It is at this point that discrepancies can occur in designs, leading to a need for rectification later in the manufacturing cycle. However, a solution to these problems is available in the shape of AutoCAD Electrical. Built on the AutoCAD platform, it has been pro- duced specifically for designing electrical control systems and can help design 2D industrial control systems faster and more accurately and can share electrical schematic information with Autodesk Inventor Professional. The software can track all wire numbers and component tags, and cross references coil and contact information. It also has the ability to generate automated reports, ranging from bills of materials to from-to lists, to eliminate the errors associated with manual reports.
