25 years and still going strong

In this issue of EDN, you'll find another insightful article, "Switching-regulator-supply provides low- noise biasing for varactor diodes," from analog-design experts Jim Williams and David Beebe of Linear Technology Corp. This story appears in EDN a little more than 25 years after Williams' first EDN publication, which discussed how to achieve 0.01% regulation at power levels of 100W (Reference 1). Designing this precise and powerful supply was not just an academic exercise. Willliams developed it for an electrophoresis application, where cells are separated from each other via application of a high voltage. The process is temperature-sensitive, so applied power regulation is a contributing performance factor.
