Followers of the FPGA and CPLD markets have undoubtedly noticed a baffling recent development. After years spent boosting their on-chip logic capacities and haggling over whose logic-cell structure and on-chip routing is the best, many of the vendors have switched gears and begun touting their burgeoning amounts of on-chip RAM and support for ever-speedier I/O interfaces. Altera's 1.5V, 0.15-micron-li thography-based Apex II is no exception to this trend.
