Power subsystems today are becoming more integrated into total systems, evolving from stand-alone "necessary evils" to monitored subsystems that function as controlled peripherals. These system-controlled power subsystems bring many benefits, such as power savings, sequencing, and margining. With the recent emphasis on digital power management, it's even more important to standardize system communication with the power subsystem. The new PMBus (Power Management Bus) communications protocol targets board-and-shelf communication between systems and power subsystems.
