It's an attractive idea to be able to control a relatively remote device, such as a light, using a small, portable controller, such as a light switch, without running a network of wiring. A cursory investigation into the requirements of the lighting industry points to Zig-Bee's mesh-networking capability as a leading candidate for this role because it addresses most of the requirements of today's lighting systems and provides a set of capabilities for the future. For other styles of lighting systems, however, ZigBee is not necessarily ideal (see sidebar "Network applications").
