Last month in this space we perused a particular case of a second building on a property and the location of the service disconnecting means. Now we will look at the subject in general. Discussed here is the most common situation of a three-wire 120/240 Volt 10 feeder to the second building, two ungrounded conductors and a neutral conductor, and more than one branch circuit in the second building. Even when leaving the first building as a feeder, the rule for many years was to treat the disconnect and the grounding of the neutral at the second building as if it were a service. A grounding electrode if not existing had to be installed, and the neutral conductor had to be bonded to the grounding electrode conductor and the equipment grounding conductors within the disconnect either inside or outside the building.
