GFCI Receptacles Require an Equipment Grounding Conductor to Be Safe

A Reader Hired An Electrician To install a new circuit for a 120-volt 1Φ window air conditioner in his home, but was later informed by a friend that he could have saved money by simply replacing the existing two-wire receptacle with a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) receptacle. He asked if he did the right thing. He certainly did. There is permission in National Electrical Code(NEC) Section406.3(D)(3)(b) to replace a nongrounding receptacle with a GFCI receptacle, where no grounding means exists in the box, and it requires adding the marking "No Equipment Ground."
