The Electric Transformation

Over the coming years, the ways customers use electricity-and the ways our industry provides it-will change dramatically. Electric utilities are leading nothing less than a technological transformation in the nation. The transformation means energy efficiency-systems and programs that allow consumers, electric companies, and the nation to reduce energy use, lower costs, shave peaks, and minimize environmental impacts. It is the "fifth" fuel: Along with coal, nuclear, gas, and renewables, it makes up our diverse portfolio and allows for the deferral of construction of power plants. Electric utilities are investing heavily in the delivery system, developing new efficiency programs, and bolstering those already in place. With a broad coalition of environmental and efficiency groups, the industry hasrnproposed strengthening state and federal building efficiency standards and encouraging regulation that makes efficiency a sustainable business for utilities (the natural purveyors of efficiency) and a valuable service for customers.
