Bandwidth as a commodity: fate or fancy?

In the past, communications engineers sought to minimize bandwidth but maintain acceptable performance. The bandwidth conservation agenda has been superseded as the demand for increasing data speed, quantity and quality has yielded a plethora of bandwidth. The bandwidth boom has spawned a strategic opportunity for capacity management and consumer connectivity, especially for energy companies. Bandwidth trading is emerging as the great facilitator of this movement.
