Much has been written commending energy policy to the incoming Obama administration. Joining the chorus, I encourage the new administration to make reducing worldwide emissions of climate-changing gases a guiding principle of every aspect of its domestic energy policy. Even if the United States succeeds in reducing proportionately its own greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to sustainable levels, averting potentially catastrophic climate change will still require worldwide implementation of innovative technologies such as the capture and sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO_2) to be developed in connection with the coal-fired FutureGen project. These technologies can then be exported from the U.S. and other industrialized countries to China, India, South Africa and the other converging economies of the developing world.
