Let me explain: Most shops should actually have three sets of gage blocks: 1. A master set only used for calibrating other sets or master comparator indicators 2. A calibration set used to calibrate other instruments 3. A working set used for measuring, setting sine bars, etc. The master set, if utilized properly, will show essentially zero wear and can be calibrated infrequently. My master set is shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2. This calibration must be done by either the original manufacturer or an accredited lab. This service is very expensive as the accuracy of calibration must be in the single millionths of an inch.
