The polls are closed, the ballots counted. It has been a long contest for the most powerful job going, a tight race run as much on matters of character and political acumen as on the issues. Now there is a winner, although he takes the reins under a cloud. His predecessor enjoyed a period of unprecedented economic expansion, but that glorious run could be coming to an end, making a tough job even tougher. For all his qualifications, including an Ivy League degree, the new man still has to convince the world that he is up to the job.
