For over a decade, South Africa has been a coun-try in denial. The result is that it now has more Hiv-positive people than any other in the world. It is at last coming to terms with the appalling consequences of this plague, yet its government remains, in the words of a top official in the international war against aids, "the most difficult country that we have to deal with anywhere".
