A few weeks ago "The Daily Show"—the fake news programme that has replaced "Saturday Night Live" as the gold standard of American satire-dispatched a fake newsman to interview the governor of Illinois. The interviewer repeatedly stumbled over Rod Blagojevich's name before giving up and calling him "Governor Smith". He urged him to explain his position on emergency contraception-the governor had recently ordered pharmacists to fill prescriptions for the morning-after pill-by playing the role of a "hot 17-year-old". As a final indignity, he asked whether he was the "gay governor". "Is he teasing me or is that legit?", wondered a flustered Mr Blagojevich.
