Is she up to the job? During the election campaign last summer, her political foes tried their hardest to spread doubts about whether Angela Merkel had the right stuff to be chancellor. Now, even before her first 100 days are up, it is safe to say that she has: few government leaders have had such a smooth start, and some 60% of Germans think she is doing a good job. That is not a bad platform from which to start her first tour beyond Europe, which will take her this week to Washington and Moscow.
