A three-month strike by Hollywood's writers threatened to ruin the Oscars later this month: actors were unwilling to cross writers' picket lines, so the awards ceremony's organisers planned to show film clips and history instead of the usual procession of glamorous stars. Vanity Fair, Hollywood's favourite magazine, cancelled its famous Oscars party. tv audiences were in decline as programmes ran out of plotlines. But on February 12th, after striking a deal with the big media companies, the writers agreed to go back to work.
