AMERICA'S conservative Catholic bish-ops have had a testing couple of years. Pope Francis has strived to end the church's single-minded focus on the issues of personal morality, mainly abortion and gay marriage, with which they are preoccupied. So when Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, a former papal nuncio to the United States, accused the pope of covering up the predations of a once-powerful American cardinal and called for the pontiff to resign, some conservative bishops saw an opportunity to strike back.
