COMMONS, ANTICOMMONS AND PUBLIC CHOICE: JAMES BUCHANAN ON LIBERAL DEMOCRACY

Individualism and Political Disorder looks set to be the final major work of the Nobel Prize-winning economist and founder of public choice theory, James M. Buchanan (1919-2013). The book is co-authored with Buchanan's final major collaborator, Yong J. Yoon. The title deliberately echoes F. A. Hayek's 1945 collection, Individualism and Economic Order, in which Hayek set out a compelling account of the economic order spontaneously produced by individual choices in private markets. Buchanan and Yoon's book, by contrast, shows the complexity of political exchanges compared with market exchanges, and the paradoxical, puzzling and often disorderly outcomes thereby produced.
