Utilizing the Eurocard form factor popularized by the VME bus, CompactPCI has grown rapidly since its introduction in 1998. The PICMG 2.16 and PICMG 2.17 specifications have increased performance and reliability of CompactPCI, addressing the growing broadband capacity of communications systems. It is also very dominant in the embedded controller space for industrial applications and other applications with high-end data/signal processing or a large number of sensor inputs. The increase in performance demands for embedded systems has also led to a new specification called VITA (VMEbus International Trade Association). The new VXS VITA 41.0 specification starts with a standard VME64x backplane design and implements a high speed fabric by replacing the existing PO connector with a new Multi-Gig 7 Row connector and adding hub slots tully populated with the new connector. The backplane is backwards compatible to VME64x/VME, allowing standard VME and VME64x cards. Featured here is a line of switched serial backplanes compliant to the new VITA 41 specification and a PICMG CompactPCI series of backplanes.
