Exceptional levels on the tanker market have meant that the Drewry all earnings index has ended the year almost 170% higher than it closed 12 months ago and some 40% higher than the previous month. As demand for winter fuels increased and cargo supplies rose, rising refinery activity fed the rate increase on both sides of the Suez. Meanwhile on the crude market the last two months have seen Vlcc earnings rising to an average $130,000pd in December. For most of the year this sector was best described with "sluggish growth" but rising global refinery runs have sparked an upturn as the year ends. As the Baltic Dirty Tanker Index closed the year at over 2,000, Tanker owners were having a very happy new year!
